Beschreibung
As I Lay Dying (1930) is the fifth novel from legendary Southern gothic author William Faulker. Utilizing his signature stream-of-consciousness writing style, Faulkner paints a tragic picture of family, morality, and death through a sprawling narrative that includes 15 narrators spread over 59 chapters.
The narrative itself follows the Bundren family. Sick and dying, Addie Bundren, wife to Anse Bundren and mother to the five Bundren children, requests to be buried in her hometown of Jefferson, Mississippi. Upon her death, the family sets out to fulfill her wishes, only to find themselves hindered by man and nature alike, their own selfish desires clashing with the harsh realities of early 20th century American life. To this day, the novel continues to be celebrated for its pioneering use of multiple-perspective storytelling and its reflections on the existential metaphysics of everyday life, a theme that would blossom into the Southern Renaissance movement.
