Beschreibung
Surah An-Nisa (Arabic for "The Women") is the fourth chapter of the Quran, consisting of 176 verses. It is one of the longest surahs and addresses a wide range of topics central to Islamic life, with a particular focus on social, family, and legal matters - including rights and responsibilities related to women, which gives the chapter its name.
Revealed in Medina, the surah was intended to guide the Muslim community as it grew and established a structured society. It begins by emphasizing the equality of all human beings in the eyes of Allah, stating that humanity was created from a single soul and made into pairs (4:1). This foundational principle underpins its teachings on justice, respect, and fair treatment for all people, regardless of gender or background.
Key themes include rules governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and the care of orphans - areas that were critical for organizing community life at the time. The surah outlines clear guidelines to protect vulnerable members of society, especially women and children, while also defining the rights and duties of spouses, parents, and relatives. It addresses issues such as polygamy (with strict conditions of fairness), the importance of maintaining good relations with in-laws, and proper conduct in family disputes.
Beyond family matters, Surah An-Nisa covers topics like warfare, peacemaking, justice in legal proceedings, and the importance of fulfilling promises and contracts. It emphasizes that judgments must be based on truth and equity, and that believers should stand up for justice even if it goes against their own interests or family ties (4:135).
Throughout the chapter, there are reminders of faith, accountability, and the Hereafter, encouraging believers to balance their worldly responsibilities with spiritual devotion. The surah's teachings remain highly relevant today, offering guidance on building just, compassionate communities and fostering healthy relationships based on mutual respect.
