The Evidence of Her Judgment

Elizabeth Bennet has always trusted her own judgment. She has never, in twenty years of careful observation, been so thoroughly mistaken.

When Mr. Darcy ruins Jane Bennet's wedding by returning unannounced and saying precisely the wrong thing at the wrong moment, Elizabeth confronts him. The confrontation becomes a misunderstanding. The misunderstanding becomes a false engagement. And the false engagement becomes something neither of them expected: a deal.

He will give her seven chances to confirm everything she already believes about him. She adds her own condition: for the duration of the arrangement, he must answer every question she puts to him — truthfully, completely, without evasion.

She is certain of her verdict. She has always been certain.

The evidence, however, is not cooperating.
